Introduction
A well-kept section usually needs a line trimmer, a hedge trimmer, a blower and maybe a pole pruner. Buy them all separately and that is four motors to maintain, four tools to store, and a shed that fills up fast.
The STIHL KombiSystem takes a different approach: one power unit, and a range of attachments that click on and off in seconds.
How it works
The heart of the system is the KombiEngine, the motor and handle. Each attachment (the business end of the tool on its own shaft) connects to it with a simple coupling and a turn of a knob. No tools needed.
Petrol or battery
- Petrol KombiEngines give you the power and run time for bigger properties and rougher work
- Battery KombiEngines are quieter, lighter and start at the push of a button, and run on STIHL's professional battery range, so the same battery can power other tools too
What you can attach
The attachment range covers most jobs around a property, including:
- Line trimmer and brushcutter for lawns, edges and long grass
- Hedge trimmer, including angled versions for the tops of hedges
- Pole pruner for high branches, without a ladder
- Blower for paths, driveways and decks
- Edger for crisp borders along paths
- Power sweep for clearing debris from paved areas and artificial turf
- Cultivator for working the soil in garden beds
You only buy the attachments you need, and add more later as your jobs change.
Who it suits
Great for
- Home owners with a variety of jobs but limited storage space
- Lifestyle blocks, where one motor can cover the trimming, pruning and clean-up
- Anyone wanting to spread the cost: start with the power unit and one or two attachments
Maybe not for
- Professionals running several tools at once with a crew, where dedicated machines save swapping time
- Very heavy daily use of a single tool, where a dedicated machine built for that one job may be the better fit
Tips for getting the most from it
- Store attachments hanging up in the shed. They take very little room that way
- Keep the coupling clean so attachments seat properly
- Service the engine once a year like any other tool; attachments need their own care too (sharp blades, fresh trimmer line, lubricated gearheads)
- Match the attachment to the job. A brushcutter blade for gorse, trimmer line for lawn edges
Is the KombiSystem right for you?
If your shed is full of single-use tools, or you are setting up from scratch and want to cover a lot of jobs without a lot of motors, the KombiSystem is well worth a look.
One motor, maintained properly, doing the work of five. That is the whole idea.
